In 1996 USSR national artist and member of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexander Shilov guided by numerous requests from the part of the audience concerning organization of his permanent exhibition donated to the Fatherland a collection of 355 paintings and graphics. The artist's generous donation highly appreciated by the state authorities resulted in establishing in May 1997 of the Moscow state art gallery of USSR national artist Alexander Shilov. Alexander Shilov holds the position of the Gallery's Art Director.
The gallery is constantly refilled with new Shilov's works of art traditionally donated to the state on the City Day of Moscow. Currently its collection consists of more than 900 works of art, dedicated to Russian people and presented in the permanent exhibition publicly displayed.
The work of A. Shilov is based on the best traditions of classical realistic art. A complex and diverse picture of Russian spiritual life of XX and the beginning of XXI centuries is reflected in the Portrait Gallery of our contemporaries, created by Shilov over the years of work inspired by his companions. Folk images, critical works, portraits of participants of the Great Patriotic war, spies, clerics, intellectuals, perfect female images, portraits of famous artists, scientists, doctors performed at the highest skill level are marked by the deep psychological formula, life authenticity and inner truth of the characters. Genre paintings, lyrical landscapes and still-life painting are also exhibited in the Gallery. Graphics section has a special significant place in it.
Moscow state art gallery of USSR national artist Alexander Shilov is one of the most famous cultural centers of the capital. The gallery regularly hosts concerts, literary evenings, "Meetings at portraits" that involve characters of Shilov's works of art, which are our legendary contemporaries and role models for future generations.
